NASCAR at Martinsville: Kevin Harvick and 6 Drivers Who'll Be in the Mix

PDFPrintE-mail

Bleacher Report - NASCAR >>
There is nothing that can really be compared to Martinsville Speedway in the context of the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The closest resemblance to any track it has on the circuit is Bristol Motor Speedway, though even that is not really close. Both tracks are about a half-mile, but Martinsville's flat surface requires a different approach for the teams and drivers as opposed to the steep inclines of Bristol.Drivers will need to have eyes in the back of their head and would be wise to have a heavy foot on the brakes. There really isn't any way to coast around the tight
corners at Martinsville. Some drivers really excel, for various reasons, at this track. Defending Goody's Fast Relief 500 winner Kevin Harvick will certainly be competitive as he seeks his first victory of the 2012 season, though he will certainly have plenty of stiff challenges all day from a cadre of other hungry wolves.Begin Slideshow...(Read Full Article)

Matt Kenseth: Why Is Daytona 500 Champ Still Looking for a Sponsor?

PDFPrintE-mail

Bleacher Report - NASCAR >>
It is a conundrum as to how some drivers with lesser credentials have a full dance card of sponsors, while Matt Kenseth, NASCAR's 2003 Cup champion, has been without a primary sponsor for a good chunk of the 2012 season. There was a vortex of sponsorship expirations at the end of the 2011 season at Roush Fenway Racing. Crown Royal, the primary sponsor of Kenseth's No. 17, jumped ship after two years. Prior to Crown Royal, DeWalt had been the primary sponsor for 10 years. Now a group of corporate sponsors have been cobbled together with Best Buy as the primary
sponsor for nine races. Valvoline, Zest and Ford Eco Boost picked up a few other races, but the search for a primary sponsor for the remaining 15 races continues. At RFR, a fourth team for the No. 6 was dropped for lack of sponsorship. Greg Biffle re-signed 3M and Carl Edwards has a variety of companies covering his sponsorship for 2012. Most sponsorship agreements are made prior to the start of any given season because corporations need to have their financial plans in order. It is hard to pick up major sponsors once the season is underway. Next, we look at the economy and the struggle to regain strength. Just as we start to see improvements, spiking fuel prices feed through every part of the economy....(Read Full Article)

You need JavaScript enabled to view it or on Twitter at @jaybusbee , we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face. So I was off NASCAR duty this past weekend covering the NCAAs. While the Cali race was proceeding, I was in the Georgia Dome watching Kentucky treat Baylor the way Juan Pablo Montoya treats jet dryers. And it got me to thinking: there were about 60,000 people in the Dome, and the place was absolutely
rocking. We need to just start running NASCAR in smaller arenas. No more superspeedways. We ought to run NASCAR in, like, municipal auditoriums. Sellouts every week! Your letters. And a rather dull race at Cali resulted in ... well, a mixed mailbag. Let's begin with an old favorite. If I hear Ray Evernham or Marty Smith say one more time that the expectations placed on Danica Patrick are "unfair," I may smack them both! She chose this path and she is mentally tough - she can handle the expectations and doesn't need to be coddled. I am astonished when I hear these journalists/commentators say I shouldn't expect her to be in the mix at the end...(Read Full Article)
